April Cornell is truly an artist as much as an entrepreneur. The growth of her business is testimony to her unique talents. April was born in 1951 in Montreal, Canada to parents from Nova Scotia. She is one of four children, two sisters and one brother.
April’s first shop was an upstairs boutique fittingly named La Cache, opened in Montreal in 1975. Their first US shop was opened in 1981 on Columbus Avenue in New York City. Their flower-child beginning during the early 1970s has blossomed into over 100 April Cornell and La Cache Boutiques in North America and a thriving wholesale business, Cornell Trading, which sells to over 2000 accounts around the world. Having traveled the world for over 30 years in pursuit of beauty, art, and product, April is also headquartered in India, Vermont, and Montreal. April’s passion for the people of its core production region is evident by their support to Concern India Foundation and the creation of the Giving World Foundation, which helps the underprivileged residents of India.
April’s artistic expression is shown through her artful combination of color and floral designs, and her beautiful collections of romantic clothing and linens. Using nature as a guide, April’s fresh, floral prints are an inspiration to make an occasion of every day. She credits nature for providing the backdrop and the muse for many of her designs, “Flowers, leaves, and birds are the recurring motif in all elements of my merchandise.” In the midst of all this romance, April is the mother of three sons, Cameron, Lee, and Kelly. She now lives in Burlington, Vermont near the shores of picturesque Lake Champlain.
